Senior College announces summer classes

Belfast — Senior College Belfast has announced a quartet of specially designed one-day classes for summer learning opportunities. These offerings are open to all, regardless of age, and once again membership fees will be waived.

Participants need only pay $20 for each class. Bring a brown bag lunch for the 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. classes. A snack will be served each morning. All classes will be held at the Hutchinson Center.

On Thursday, July 11, Diann Henderson will present a hands-on exploratory course on the Common Lichens of the Maine Forest. The class will learn to identify and understand the mystery of this common plant in the ecosystem. The class will offer hands-on exploration as well as working with a hand lens and a sketch book. Diann is a master’s degree teacher and is a graduate of the Maine Masters Naturalist Program.

On Thursday, Aug.1, Eddie Adelman, a longtime fiction writer, will present “Tell Me a Story,” a look at what makes a great novel, movie, memoir or play. Why and how do authors create characters who stay with us and have become a part of our culture? Eddie, writer of short stories, plays, and essays has taught memoir writing at Maine libraries. He writes a humor column for the Portland Press Herald.

On Thursday, Aug. 22, Wendy Kasten with special guest Sheriff Jeff Trafton will teach Safe Online Dating for Mature Beginners. Designed to help you maneuver online dating sites safely and with ease, this session will aid in all aspects of this growing activity. A longtime teacher, Kasten chairs “Aging Well in Waldo County and met her husband online!

Rounding out the summer offerings on Wednesday, Aug. 28, well-known artist Sandi Cirillo will guide you through Beginning Drawing. As the oldest form of written communication, it is a favorite leisure activity. You will explore your creative side and learn techniques for creating a good composition. Sandi has been teaching art at Senior College for six years, following teaching art to all age levels.
