Seven Lions on hunt at New England track championships

Belfast 4x200-meter team of Jolliffe, Banks, Mehuren, Roberston-McIntire breaks own school mark

Roxbury, Mass. — A handful of Belfast student-athletes — seven to be exact — made the trek South on Saturday, March 3 to race and jump against some of the most talented high school indoor track competitors in six states and that pride of Lions more than proved they belonged in the New England "jungle."

Lions Junne Robertson-McIntire, Emily Jolliffe, Mackenzie Banks, Kelsey Mehuren, Zoe Deans, Hannah Sanderson and Jack Hansen earned the right to compete in the talent-laden New England meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College.

Student-athletes who placed among the top seven at the Maine state meets were eligible for consideration for the New England championships.

The New Englands include competitors from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The Belfast girls individual and relay results, with the first-place finishers also listed, were:

55 meters (prelim) — 1, Kyla Hill, Springfield Center, Mass., 7.21; and 14, Robertson-McIntire, Bel, 7.55.

300 meters — 1, Chloe Alfieri, Bromfield, Mass., 39.12; and 15, Junne Robertson-McIntire, Bel, 42.04.

4x200-meter relay — 1, Andover, Mass. (Ally Bennett, Hope Joel, Hannah Lansberry, Delia Barbanti), 1:43.47; and 19, Belfast (Jolliffe, Banks, Mehuren, Roberston-McIntire), 1:51.29 (broke their own school record).

4x800-meter relay — 1, Glastonbury, Conn. (Kaylen Hughes, Angela Braga, Grace Sparrow, Erin McGill), 9:13.63; and 20, Belfast (Deans, Mehuren, Sanderson, Jolliffe), 10:30.82.

The Belfast boy's individual result, with the first-place finisher also listed, was:

Long jump — 1, Dyshon Vaughn, Career, Conn., 23-5.; and 21, Hansen, Bel, 19-7.75.
