Sexual abuse suspect pleads not guilty

By Fran Gonzalez | Jan 10, 2020

Belfast — Harold E. Leathers III, 21, of Searsport, pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse of a minor at an arraignment hearing Jan. 10 at the Waldo County Unified Court.

According to a court affidavit, on June 1, 2019, Leathers engaged in a sexual act with a minor who was 15 years old at the time.

Leathers was released on personal recognizance and ordered to appear at a dispositional conference scheduled for Feb. 11.

Finding Leathers to be partially indigent, the court assigned attorney Jefferey Toothaker to represent him.

As a condition of his release, he is to have no direct or indirect contact with the victim or any unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.
