Sole survivor of Flight 46 crash tells story for 40th anniversary

Rockland — John McCafferty, who was the only survivor of the Downeast Airlines Flight 46 plane crash in Owls Head, visited our studio to talk about the experience for the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.

Flight 46 crashed in dense fog into the trees in Owls Head, killing 17, May 30, 1979.

John McCafferty, just 16 at the time, was the sole survivor of the worst civilian air disaster in Maine history.

McCafferty said he still thinks and dreams about the crash to this day and has suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He also revealed that he had a premonition about the crash before it happened.
