Searsport — The Searsport District High School baseball team certainly has experienced its share of accolades in recent years, with the most significant being the team’s recent streak of four state Class D baseball titles in five seasons.

However, the team’s fearless leader put a feather in his cap as well of late as seasoned coach John Frye was awarded the 2018-19 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) baseball coach of the year for Maine.

This year, Frye led the Vikings to the state Class D baseball championship, as he did following the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Frye was humbled by the honor, but added he is one of many people who impact the school’s baseball team, including assistant coaches Mel Grant, R.J. Robertson and Otis Kneeland, in addition to Frye’s young son, Brock.

“It's a great honor that came by surprise,” said Frye. “It really helps having the coaching staff that we have at Searsport that works so well together. But I consider that this award belongs to all of the team. Without the great group of players this would be impossible to achieve. This group of coaches work hard every day to put this group of kids in winning situations, so it's nice to see people have noticed the work we have done.”

Frye also may move forward into the pool of state awardees from the other seven Section 1 states to be considered for the Section 1 baseball coach of the year, and possibly for consideration as national coach of the year.

Frye, who has coached the Vikings seven seasons, said he has “to thank Searsport school for giving me this great opportunity with these boys.”

“This is an incredible award, but this group of coaches just want the boys to raise that gold glove,” said Frye. “And that’s what keeps us going.”
