Free rabies clinic

The Waldo County Humane Society will hold a free rabies clinic on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Victoria Grant Civic Center, 40 Park Drive, Winterport, from 9 to 11 a.m. Dr. Rachel Emerson of Ridge Runner Veterinary Hospital will administer the shots. Rabies shots are free to animal owners residing in Waldo County. Pets from other counties are welcome to come for shot for a fee of $7. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Please bring all animals on leashes or in a portable pet carrier. It is all important to bring proof of a previous rabies shot so your pet can receive a three-year rabies certificate. In addition to the rabies shots, coupon discounts toward the cost of having pets spayed or neutered will be available. For information about the clinic call 852-5033 or 323-6308. The Waldo County Humane Society is also on Facebook.

The harbor is full of black and white ducks that float in a pack in the middle of the harbor. A single lobster boat continues to go out and I saw the sternman arranging bait barrels on its return the other day. The weather continues to be gray with the occasional sunny and windy day thrown in to give us hope. The sun is setting at 4:16 p.m. and getting later every day.

This weekend brings a two-day storm with rain, sleet, ice and snow so it should be interesting. Perfect for staying in, watching the NFL football playoffs and picking a new team to root for as the Pats did not make it. I don't see any January thaw in the long-range forecast. It is always a month to reboot, restore and clean closets and drawers. The first day of spring is March 19 this year!

Thought for the week: "The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things." — Henry Ward Beecher.
