Condolences to the family of Colleen York. Colleen and her husband made jams and jellies and sold them from a little white building next to her home on Route 1. Once while out walking, I came across Colleen collecting wild strawberries here on Cape Jellison. She made the very best wild strawberry jam as well as numerous other wonderful jams.

Colleen was active in the Stockton Springs Historical Society as well as other local organizations. She told me once of her ancestor's involvement with Fort Knox and was a true Mainer.

Stockton Harbor was frozen for two days in a row, which was a rare event. Looking down toward Sears Island, the water was completely frozen over. By the bridge onto Cape Jellison, the water was visible with the changing of the tide, but there were no waves to be seen. Then the warm stretch came and all the ice melted.

Ducks swam in a group in an area where the water had melted out by Sears Island. Irving Parsons, who used to live on Cape Jellison, told a story of a relative who used to cross the frozen harbor dragging a dingy to a job on the other side of the harbor. This morning the boat was out early near the orange buoys; guess they were checking to see if the buoys survived the ice.

I saw the film "Upsides" the other day and it was very good. Sometimes movies are critically acclaimed and yet terrible to watch. This movie was panned by the critics but was wonderful to see.

Two recent movies I saw told tales of enduring friendship between people. A good friend of mine passed away last week. She was the kind of friend whom I only saw once in a while, but we always were simpatico and would pick up right where we left off.

Congratulations to New England Patriots fans! Happy Valentine's Day, too.

Thought for the week: "Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. And old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend or a meaningful day." — Dalai Lama.
