Stockton Springs Community Library

A universe of stories will begin on Tuesdays in July starting Tuesday, July 2, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. There will be fun stories, snacks and activities. This program is for children ages 3 to 12. For any questions, please call the library at 567-4147.

The Pie and Art Festival is on Saturday, Aug. 17. A wide variety of homemade pies, sweet and savory, are baked and donated by local volunteers. One hundred percent of the pie sale proceeds benefit the library’s endowment fund.

Artists who have participated in past years include members of the painting group that meets weekly at the library and other local artists, so put that date on your calendar to support the library.

Town Office

At town meeting June 15, the Board of Selectmen announced that they have hired Jennifer King of Bangor to succeed outgoing Town Manager Courtney O’Donnell, whose last day is July 3. After interviewing, the board agreed to offer Jennifer King a two-year contract with a standard six-month probationary period. She will start July 1, which means there will be some overlap with Courtney for a smooth transition, so that town business can continue without interruption.

In an email to town residents, Courtney said: "With eight years of municipal experience, including experience with the City of Bangor’s Code Enforcement Division and Community and Economic Development (Department), the Board expects she will be an excellent steward for the Town through the upcoming process regarding the future of the Stockton Springs Elementary School, in addition to all other duties as Town Manager."

Good luck to Courtney and welcome to Jennifer King.

Town offices will be closed Monday, July 1, for year-end and Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day.

Stockton Springs Historical Society

A reminder that because of Fourth of July weekend, the society's July meeting will not be held until the second Sunday, July 14.

Friends of Sears Island

Cloe Chunn will lead a walk and nature journaling workshop on Sears Island on Monday, July 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. Cloe keeps beautiful nature journals and will be discussing the value in keeping a personal record of your nature observations.

After walking the Homestead Trail for a bit, there will be time for drawing, writing and sharing. It should be a lovely afternoon. Full details about this program can be found at friendsofsearsisland.org.

Sandy Point Community Club

On Wednesday, July 17, there will be an Open Mic Plus Night with Sassafras Stomp performing fiddle and banjo tunes, ballads and original and harmonic songs. From 7 to 8 p.m., there will be the open mic format, and the music will begin at 8:15 and go until 9:30 p.m. On Wednesday, July 31, there will be a Pie Palooza at the club.

Stockton Springs looks beautiful now, with green trees and blooming flowers everywhere. More sailboats are coming into the harbor for the season. The eagles and the ospreys come by on a daily basis with the ospreys' telltale screeching indicating their position over the harbor. Hummingbirds continue to feed constantly and yellow warblers and goldfinches flit through the trees, giving a splash of brightness to the view.

Summer is heating up with lots of activities on weekends. Gardeners have been busy getting their gardens in on intermittent sunny days, and rainy ones are making it unnecessary to water. Last year was one of the hottest on record, so we'll see if this year we get any heat. My tomato plants have started flowering, so we definitely could use some more heat and sunshine.

Just Barb's is busy all the time and I am waiting for the Lobster Rail (formerly Cook's Crossing) to open. All through the long, cold spring we've been eager for summer; let's hope it'll be a fantastic one. Enjoy every day of it!

Thought for the week: “Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” — Henry James.
