Swanville — Parents and siblings of students at the Kermit Nickerson School wore their dancing shoes Tuesday night, March 11, as all were invited to take part in a family contra dance.

Since Feb. 11, the students had participated in contra dance lessons under the guidance of local caller Chrissy Fowler, lessons that were in preparation of Tuesday night's event.

Throughout the hour-long event, Fowler led students and their families through several variations of contra dancing, including instruction on how to jig, sashay, promenade and do-si-do.

Members of the Belfast Bay Fiddlers provided the music for the event.

The contra dance lessons were sponsored by the Nickerson School Parent-Teacher Group, and matching funds were provided by a combination of grants from Downeast Friends of the Folk Arts, The Country Dance and Song Society, the Belfast Flying Shoes Dance series and a private foundation.
