Summer heat: Area players enjoy web, diamond gems

Three local counties have five teams, dozens of players involved in league

Only a few weeks old, the Maine Independent Baseball League already is into the dog days of summer — with the playoffs on the horizon.

In recent local diamond 19U play, Tidewater Oil (Midcoast) won one of three close games, falling 7-4 to River Dogs-McKinney on Tuesday, July 7 and 4-3 decision to Sluggers 15u on Thursday, July 9. The team bounced back with a 5-3 home win over River Jacks on Sunday, July 12. Tidewater is 1-3 on the season.

In recent area 17U action, on Sunday, July 12, the scores were: Winthrop 8, Raiders 4; Fairfield 12, Raiders 6; Midcoast 7, River Hawks 6; Midcoast 12, River Hawks 2; Rock Coast Rip Tide 20, Maineiacs 16; and Maineiacs 6, Rock Coast Rip Tide 3. On Friday, July 10, Raiders bested Fairfield 10-6 and Midcoast edged Hermon 7-6.

Thus far, Midcoast is 6-3, Rock Coast Rip Tide, 4-2, Maineiacs, 4-5 and Raiders, 3-7.

The Knox, Waldo and Lincoln county area has five teams in two divisions, with a handful of other local players on other squads around the state.

The standings as of Monday, July 13 included:

19U — River Dogs 2-0, Skowhegan 3-1, Fairfield 1-0, Sluggers 18u 2-1, Motor City 1-1, Acadians 1-1, Sluggers 15U 1-1-1, Messalonskee 1-2-1, Tidewater Oil (Midcoast) 1-3 and River Jacks 0-3.

17U North — Motor City 8-1, Machias 6-2, Midcoast 6-3, Rock Coast Rip Tide 4-3, Sting 2-2, Hermon 4-5, Houlton 1-2, Downast Storm 3-7, Sebasticook 2-6 and River Hawks 2-6.

17U South — Falmouth 7-2, Turner Bandits 7-2, Skowhegan 4-2-1, Sluggers 1-0, Winthrop 3-3, Maineiacs 4-5, Messalonskee 2-4, Capital Bombers 2-5-1, Fairfield 3-7 and Raiders 3-7.

According the Scott Cournoyer, director of the league, the single-elimination playoffs will be at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams (if that team has a an official home venue, or another site will be determined).

The 19U games will include prelim game(s) on Tuesday, Aug. 4, quarterfinals on Thursday, Aug. 6, semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 8 and championship on Sunday, Aug. 9.

The 17U games will include prelim game(s) on Monday, Aug. 3, quarterfinals on Wednesday, Aug. 5, semifinals on Friday, Aug. 7, zone finals on Saturday, Aug. 8 and championship on Sunday, Aug. 9.

Area 17U teams

Maineiacs (Waldoboro) — Isaac McCollett, Ethan Reed, Garret Hutchins, Hayden Staples, Isaac Simmons, Tucker Holgerson, Aaron Reed, Isaac Bickford, Eli Pluecker, Porter Gahagan, Donnie Havener, Walker Simmons, Blake Morrison and Wyatt Simmons. The team is coached by Keith Simmons.

Raiders (Waldoboro) — Max Moody, Noah Crosby, Isaiah Staples, Ryan Jarvis, Kallon Mortensen, Tyler Metcalf, Logan Look, Tristan Francis, Ivan Murphy, Matthew Holbrook, Sam Moody and Kyle Smith. The team is coached by Matt Moody.

Midcoast (Belfast) — Oliver Tarbox, Zepherin Leppanen, Kyle Ingraham, Matthew LeBlanc, Curtis Littlefield, Dakota Harriman, Cody Reynolds, Jacob Lindelof, Andrew Donald, Cole Ellis, Ashton Ellis, Gage Ellis, Declan Knowlton, Daveon Raven, Noah Hurd, Anthony Lepore, Liam McConnell, Patrick McConnell and Nathan Ashey. The team is coached by Fred Black.

Rock Coast Rip Tide (Five Town) — Elias Libby, Duncan Oakes-Nelsen, Alex Bartlett, Bowen Brann, Joe Coffey, Cameron Brown, Sawyer Olsen, Mason Chadwick, Lucas Moody, Blade Brann, Owen Hotchkin, Owen Berez, Landonn Tabbutt, Eben Fagonde and Ben Tohanczyn. The team is coached by Barrett Brown.

Area 19U team

Tidewater Oil (Midcoast in Belfast) — Dylan Abbott, Jason Bartlett, Isaac Bernosky, Brandon Cournoyer, True Crane, Joey Curtis, Reid Gagnon, Eamon Goscinski, Liam McConnell, Patrick McConnell, Obie Miller, Sam Moody, Dakota Payson, Ethan Porter, Aiden Schecter, Tanner Veilleux and Tommy Walker. The team is coached by Kurt Payson, Tim Moody and Penson Bartlett.

17U

Midcoast 12, River Hawks 2 (6 inns.)

At Searsport July 12, Midcoast’s offense came out swinging in a lopsided victory. Midcoast scored one run in the first and second innings, two in the fourth and fifth and six in the sixth. The River Hawks tallied their lone runs in the first inning.

LeBlanc (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI) led Midcoast, while Cole Ellis (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Liam McConnell (hit, run, 2 RBIs), Reynolds (2 hits, run, 2 RBIs), Ashey (2 runs, RBI), Patrick McConnell (hit, 2 runs), Lepore (hit, RBI), Littlefield (hit) and Leppanen (run) had strong offensive showings.

For the River Hawks, with first names unavailable, Bates (hit, RBI, 2 walks), R. Adams (hit, run), Desjardin (run) and Merrihew (RBI) keyed the offense.

Leppanen and Reynolds pitched three innings for Midcoast, as the two combined to allow two hits and eight walks, with eight strikeouts. Phelps went the distance for the River Hawks and gave up 10 hits and six walks, with four strikeouts.

Midcoast 7, Hermon 6

At Searsport July 10, Midcoast walked off with the victory when Knowlton scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh. Midcoast tallied one run in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Hermon plated two in the first, one in the second and sixth, as well as two in the seventh.

For Midcoast, Patrick McConnell (2 hits, run, RBI) led the charge, while Leppanen (hit, run, 2 RBIs), LeBlanc (hit, run, RBI), Knowlton (2 runs) and Reynolds (2 hits) had strong plate appearances.

For Hermon, with first names unavailable, England (2 hits, 2 RBIs) keyed the offense, while Gogan (2 hits, 2 runs), Gage (2 hits, run), Kokoska (hit, run, RBI), Doyon (RBI), Andrei (RBI), Fowler (run), Taylor (RBI) and Foley (run) were strong at the plate.

Knowlton, Gage Ellis, Reynolds and Tarbox combined on the mound to give up seven hits and seven walks, with 10 strikeouts for Midcoast. Crisafulli pitched a complete game for Hermon, as he allowed six hits and four walks, with six strikeouts.

Maineiacs 6, Rock Coast Rip Tide 3

At Waldoboro July 12, Maineiacs doubled up the visitors.

Leading the hosts on offense were Staples (double, 2 runs), E. Reed (double, 2 RBIs), Hutchins (run), Morrison (2 runs), Pluecker (2 hits) and Wyatt Simmons (run).

For Rip Tide, Bartlett (double), Bowen Brann (hit, run), Moody (hit, run, RBI) and Brown (RBI) led the charge.

McCollett (4 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts) picked up the pitching win for Maineiacs, while Chadwick (2 hits, strikeout, 4 walks in 4.2 innings) and Coffey (2 hits, strikeout, 4 walks in 2.1 innings) worked the bump for Rip Tide.

Rock Coast Rip Tide 20, Maineiacs 16

At Waldoboro July 12, the tide rose highest for the visitors who earned a victory in a offensive-minded affair.

For Rip Tide, Libby (3 hits, 4 runs, RBI), Bartlett (3 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs), Oakes-Nelsen (hit, 4 runs, RBI), Bowen Brann (double, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), Coffey (hit, run, 4 RBIs), Moody (RBI), Berez (hit), Olsen (hit, 2 runs), Hotchkin (hit) and Blade Brann (double, 2 runs) led the charge.

For Maineiacs, Staples (2 hits, 4 runs), Morrison (hit, run, RBI), E. Reed (hit, 3 runs, RBI), Hutchins (hit, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Holgerson (hit, 2 runs, RBI), A. Reed (single, 3 doubles, 2 runs, 5 RBIs), Bickford (hit, run), Walker Simmons (hit, run, RBI) and Wyatt Simmons (2 hits, 2 RBIs) keyed the offense.

On the mound for Rip Tide were Libby (7 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts in 3.2 innings) and Bowen Brann (7 hits, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts in 3.1 innings).

For Maineiacs, Staples (hit, 3 walks), E. Reed (6 hits, 7 strikeouts in 3.2 innings), A. Reed (2 hits, 2 walks in 1/3 inning), Morrison (2 walks in 1/3 inning) and Hutchins (3 hits, walk, 3 strikeouts in 2.2 innings) worked the bump.

Motor City 8, Rock Coast Rip Tide 5

At Hermon July 10, the hosts outlasted the Rip Tide by three runs.

For Rip Tide's offense, Libby (hit, 2 runs), Oakes-Nelsen (double), Bartlett (hit, RBI), Coffey (run), Tohanczyn (run), Olsen (run), Chadwick (hit, RBI) and Moody (hit, RBI) led the way.

For Motor City, with first names unavailable, Pinkham (2 runs), Seymour (double, 2 runs, RBI), Hayes (2 hits, run, RBI), Thomas (2 hits, run, RBI), Roberts (run) and Hopkins (hit, run) were catalysts.

On the mound, Oakes-Nelsen (6 hits, 5 strikeouts in 4.2 innings) and Chadwick (strikeout, walk in 1.1 innings) worked for Rip Tide, while Hanscome (5 hits, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts in 5.1 innings), Seymour (2 strikeouts in 2/3 inning) and Hodgkins (2 walks, 2 strikeouts in inning) pitched for the hosts.

River Hawks 6, Rock Coast Rip Tide 1

At Rockport July 1, the hosts could not get their bats going as the visitors left town with a comfortable win.

For Rip Tide, Bowen Brann (double), Coffey (hit), Brown (single, double, run) keyed the offense, while Bowen Brann (2 hits, 4 walks, strikeout in 2 innings), Libby (hit, 5 walks, 2 strikeouts in 2.1 innings) and Coffey (2 hits in 2.2 innings) worked on the mound.

For the River Hawks, with first names unavailable, Desjardin (2 hits, run, RBI), Peckham (hit, run), Herena (hit, run), Donovan (RBI), Bates (RBI), Lyons (hit, run), Hodgkins (run), McCloud (run), Chase (RBI) and Cote (RBI) keyed the charge, while Peckham (5 strikeouts in 3 innings), Lyons (hit, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts in 2 innings) and Phelps (3 hits, strikeout in 2 innings) pitched.

Tidewater Oil 5, River Jacks 3

At Searsport July 12, Tidewater Oil scored the game’s final three runs in a come-from-behind win. Tidewater Oil scored two runs in the first inning and three in the fifth, while the River Jacks scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth.

Leading Tidewater Oil on offense were Moody (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Schecter (hit, run, 2 RBIs, 2 walks), Bartlett (hit, run, 2 RBIs) and Abbott (hit, RBI).

For the River Jacks, with first names unavailable, Spencer (hit, run), Wildman (hit, run), Hale (hit, run, RBI) and Chiappone (hit) led the offense.

Moody went the distance on the bump for Tidewater Oil, as he allowed four hits and four walks, with eight strikeouts. Pearson and Chiappone pitched for the River Jacks, and combined for five hits and six walks, with six strikeouts.

River Dogs-McKinney 7, Tidewater Oil 4

At Searsport July 7, the River Dogs took an early lead and rode that momentum to a three-run victory. Tidewater Oil scored three in the third and one in the sixth, while the River Dogs scored two in the first, three in the third and two more in the fourth.

Leading Tidewater Oil at the dish were Moody (run), Bartlett (hit), Schecter (hit, run, 3 RBIs), Abbott (hit), Bernosky (hit, run), Veilleux (hit), Miller (RBI) and Cournoyer (hit, run).

For the River Dogs, Nate Allain (hit, 2 runs), Sam Economy (run), Gavin Partridge (hit, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), Kent Oliver (run, RBI), Kolby Moore (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Charlie Spiegel (hit) paced the offense.

Curtis, Bartlett and Schecter toed the rubber for Tidewater Oil, as the trio allowed five hits and six walks, with five strikeouts. Jacque Labonte, Spiegel and Wyatt Harriman pitched for the River Dogs, allowing six hits and eight walks, with five strikeouts.

Sluggers 4, Tidewater Oil 3

At Searsport July 9, the Sluggers slugged their way past host Tidewater Oil. The hosts scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth, while the Sluggers scored one in the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Leading Tidewater Oil at the plate were Moody (2 hits, RBI), Schecter (hit, RBI), Payson (hit), Abbott (2 hits, run, RBI), Curtis (hit), Walker (run) and Cournoyer (hit, run).

For the Sluggers (first names unavailable), L. O’Neal (run), I. Hainer (hit), Q. Pileggi (run), M. Kremin (hit, 2 RBIs), J. Sutherland (run), C. Smith (hit, run), N. Tibbetts (RBI) and B. Dennison (hit, RBI) paced the offense.

Crane and Payson pitched for the hosts, as the two allowed four hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts. C. Smith and J. Sutherland pitched for the Sluggers, as the two allowed eight hits and six walks, with three strikeouts.
