Palermo — An early Sunday morning fire destroyed a mobile home on Parmenter Road.

Fire Chief Roger Komandt said the homeowner and his girlfriend made it out safely, along with their dog. He believed their cats had perished in the blaze.

The call came in around 12:30 a.m. March 28, Komandt said, and the mobile home was totally engulfed by the time crews arrived.

There was "a lot of stuff scattered throughout the homeowner's yard," he said, including a storage container and a camper, which made it tough to reach the trailer itself.

Liberty Fire Chief Bill Gillespie said the driveway was a narrow, muddy dirt road with only room for one truck at a time. He said trucks had to "stack up."

Besides Palermo, crews from Liberty, Montville, Albion and China responded to the call.

Komandt said crews remained on scene until around 6:30 a.m. putting out hotspots, adding that the mobile home was destroyed.

The cause of the fire, he said, is under investigation. "The Fire Marshal's Office is taking point on that."
