The visiting Mustangs of Thorndike beat the Lions 39-24.

Belfast — The beginning of the high school girls basketball season for the Mustangs of Mount View and Lions of Belfast had been rough — as the Waldo County athletic rivals had a combined 0-10 record in 2017.

Flip the page to the 2018 calendar year, and Mount View’s “goose egg” in the win column disappeared, as the Mustangs used a strong third quarter on Tuesday night, Jan. 2 to take down the Lions 39-24.

“The kids have been working very hard,” said Mount View coach Mark Cooper. “We put the time and effort into practice and it’s nice to see it paying off.”

The visiting Mustangs outscored Belfast 13-3 in the third frame to pull away for good. Mount View led 14-2 after the first quarter and 24-14 at halftime.

Andrea Crosby keyed Mount View's scorers with 20 points, with Shala Davis tallied 15 and Kate Bennett four.

For Belfast, Grace Fitzjurls led the way with seven points; Kayci Faulkingham, five; Leah Marriner, five; Madison Hemmingway, Alexia Sweet and Emma Mehuren, two; and Lillie Mitchell, one.

The game looked to be a runaway Mustang freight train early on as Mount View started the game with a 12-0 run — off Crosby’s eight points and two from Davis and Bennett — to build a comfortable advantage.

Belfast got its offense to click in the second quarter, as the Lions started a 10-2 run. The hosts got a layup from Mehuren and a 3-pointer from the top of the key, followed by a long two by Faulkingham to slice the deficit to single digits.

A two by Davis stopped the run, but a trey from Fitzjurls cut the Mustang lead back to four points.

Mount View broke out of its scoring funk to finish the second stanza with an 8-2 burst, to go back up by 10 points at halftime.

The third frame almost was an exact copy of the first, as the Mustang defense forced poor shots by the Lions, which allowed the visitors to surge ahead — this time increasing their lead to 20 points.

Crosby netted eight more points in the quarter, to finish her 20-point performance, with Davis scored five.

“I don’t know too many teams that can stop [Crosby] one-on-one when she catches the ball in the low post,” Cooper said. “We’re going to go with the 6-3 girl. I think every team in the league would do the same thing.”

Belfast’s only bucket in the third quarter came from a Fitzjurls 3-pointer.

The home team tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too much. Marriner scored all five of her points in the final frame, while Mitchell and Fitzjurls adding one point off free throws.

In the Maine Principal’s Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Mount View (1-4, 0.5556) is 14th, while Belfast (0-6, 0.0000) is 15th. Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
