Watershed School, Free Street, Camden. William Balch, Ph.D., presents his research on changes during the past 20 years. A senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay, he began his career in oceanography at age 14 doing microscope counts of phytoplankton after school and has been doing oceanography ever since. He went on to receive his B.A. from Cornell University and Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

He has participated in research expeditions in Patagonia, the Southern Ocean and in the north Atlantic. For 20-plus years he and his research group have gathered data on coastal productivity and how carbon moves in the Gulf of Maine in a project called the Gulf of Maine North Atlantic Time Series (GNATS).
