February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Heart disease is preventable and controllable. Learn how by attending Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center’s Know Your Numbers: Healthy Heart Blood Pressure Workshop and Clinic at 521 Main Street, Damariscotta. We live our lives by the numbers: phone numbers, PIN numbers, stock market numbers. But do you know the heart health numbers that could literally save your life? Wear Red for Women and join Nurse Practitioner Jini Lewis, MS, PNP on February 7 at 10:30 a.m., have your blood pressure checked and learn about the three key numbers you need -- including one surprisingly easy one that could give you a lifesaving preview of your cardiac risk.

Each year, the first Friday of February is a day when we call attention to the #1 killer of women: heart disease. Learn how taking good care of your heart, by knowing your numbers, is one means of controlling your risk factors for heart disease. Take the first steps in the life-saving awareness-to-action movement by registering for and wearing something red to this informative heart health workshop.  Although this blood pressure clinic and workshop is free, donations supporting Center programs are always welcome. To register call 563-1393 by February 6.

National Wear Red Day reminds women and those who love them to take action against heart disease. It urges women to eat healthier, be more physically active, and talk to their doctors about their personal risk for heart disease. The Heart Truth® is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease and is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Through the campaign, NHLBI leads the nation in a landmark heart health awareness movement that is being embraced by millions who share the common goal of better heart health for all women. On February 7, join The Heart Truth® and wear red! Help us promote the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness, and invite your community to get involved, too.

America Goes Red Challenge: Show Your Spirit. Paint the Coastal Center Red. Since the Go Red For Women movement started in 2004, more than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved. Each time you come to the Center during the month of February wear red.  Bring a red heart or a stylish red decoration and help the Coastal Team circle the Coastal Community Center in red! This year be a part of the America Goes Red Challenge On February 7 at 10:30 AM and again on February 26 at noon Show Us Your Red.
