The meaning of Money -  Adam Kohlstrom

Luke 16:1-32

How would you summarize today’s sermon to someone else?

How is God speaking to us? How will you respond (Mt. 7:24-27; James 1:22)?

Luke 16:8-9. Jesus commends the manager for using money to win friends for himself in the world to which he was committed. What then is the lesson in this parable for us?

Luke 16:10-13. Why does Jesus commend the faithful stewardship of what we have in this world?

Luke 16:14-15. The Pharisees justified themselves in the eyes of men by giving alms liberally, yet for all their giving what was wrong with their hearts (Matthew 6:1-4; 6:19-24; Deuteronomy 5:7,19,21; 1 Timothy 6:10)?

Luke 16:14-18. Jesus’ teaching about money in vv.1-13 raises the issue of his authority and exposes the divided loyalties of the Pharisees (vv.14-15). Jesus proclaims that the arrival and authority of the Kingdom does not invalidate, but fulfills, the Law and Prophets (vv.16-17). Using the divorce command as illustration (v.18), Jesus calls His hearers to integrity and obedience to the authority of God. What divides your loyalties today? What hinders your unquestioned obedience to God’s authority?

16:19-31. What does Jesus proclaim as the path to blessing (16:9, 29,31)? This is not teaching a salvation by works, but that a changed heart changes our relationship to God’s authority (v.13) and commands – including His commands regarding money. What do the “Law and Prophets” command regarding use of money (Deuteronomy 15:7-11; Proverbs 14:21; 14:31; 22:9; 28:27; 31:8-9; Isaiah 58:6-11; Ezekiel 16:48-49)?

How does Jesus’ teaching here speak to you about your own relationship to and use of money?
