The Only Doughnut draws 'a beautiful amount of business'

Belfast — Sherian Swindell, new co-owner with Nina Richard of The Only Doughnut, said Friday, Oct. 9, they were all sold out of doughnuts that day. “That’s not a bad thing.”

After being in business for only three days, she said she is excited and her heart is “so full” with all the people who have shown up to support them. “We’ve had a beautiful amount of business.”

Swindell said she got into the doughnut business because she loves people and loves making them happy.  When this opportunity came up, she said, it seemed like a good step, adding that she always wanted to work for herself.

Originally from North Carolina, Swindell said she had a small baking business there and that is where she first discovered her love of baking. She was also a 911 emergency dispatcher, she said.

In 2018, Swindell moved to Maine and bought an 1850s home in Searsport.  “When we landed in Maine, we knew it was where we were supposed to be.”

Her new home is the Capt. William McGilvery House, a stately mansard sea captain’s home in the historic downtown area.

Word got out, Swindell said, that The Only Doughnut might close. “I didn’t want to see The Only Doughnut go by the wayside,” she said, so she and Richard made an offer and didn’t look back.

In the three days of operating the doughnut shop, Richard said, they have sold anywhere from 250 to 275 doughnuts a day. Favorites include a sea-smoked chocolate, a maple-glazed, and a citrus doughnut with lemon glaze.

Richard said people can call an order in and “we can set it aside” for customers to pick up later. The shop will also offer online ordering in the near future and can be found on Facebook and Instagram.

What started as a booth at the United Farmers Market morphed into a dedicated retail bakery in May 2019 with former owner Sally Jaskold and head baker Matt Wheeler offering fresh, hand-cut potato doughnuts.

Swindell said they are sticking with the traditional cake-style doughnuts people have enjoyed and are introducing small batch brioche doughnuts and other baked goods. They are also focusing on more gluten-free options.

The Only Doughnut will be open through the fall and winter, “As long as the open sign is there, we’re open — even if it’s just for a cup of coffee,”  Swindell said.

One young customer suddenly remarked, “I’ve never had a doughnut stick before, but this one is the best one I’ve ever had!”

The shop, next to Aubuchon Hardware at 225 Northport Ave., is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
