This is your brain … on Election Day

Oct 12, 2018
Nancy Carey

Belfast — With the midterms a few weeks away, local writer Nancy Mimeles Carey, will offer a talk titled Your Lying Brain and the Biology of Voting Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.

Carey will explain how our fear of chaos and our need for stability influence whom we choose at the ballot box. She will address the question “Do conservatives and liberals differ psychologically and biologically?”

Carey’s presentation will be based in part on her interdisciplinary book, “How Story, God, and Your Lying Brain Turn Chaos into Order,” which ties together such diverse fields as cognitive science, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, the anthropology of religion, linguistics and fairy tales.

Carey has a master’s degree in English literature and has been published in the Boston Globe and the New Haven Register. Before moving to Belfast, she ran a salon on literary theory in Cambridge, Mass. She has taught theory at Belfast’s Senior College and is a founding member of the Midcoast Exploration of Consciousness, where she has spoken on shamanism; and on the brain and fiction.

The talk is free and open to all. For more information, call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10.
