Thomaston Place Auction Galleries to Sell Sen. William Frye Silver Presentation Cup

Sterling silver champagne bucket presented to Maine Senator William P. Frye by his US Senate colleagues in 1901

THOMASTON, ME:  A Gorham sterling silver champagne bucket presented to esteemed Maine Senator William P. Frye in 1901 by his Senate colleagues will be sold at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries (TPAG) on Saturday, August 25.  Widely respected and nationally known, Frye served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate between 1881 and 1911, and the bucket with tray was given at the close of the 56th Congress in appreciation of his ability and impartiality with which he discharged his duties.

TPAG owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux said:  “It is an honor to be able to offer this tribute to one of the great Maine leaders to the world.  We hope it stays here in Maine, ideally in a museum or historical society.”

Frye graduated from Bowdoin College, and he later contributed to the founding of Bates College where he served as a longtime trustee.   During his political career he served as mayor of Lewiston, a member of the  Maine House of Representatives, Maine’s attorney general, and he joined the U.S. House of Representatives in 1871.  In 1881, he was elected to the Senate where he continued to serve until his death in 1911.

The gilt washed silver bucket has three-handles and is decorated with grapevines and satyr heads. It is accompanied by a monogrammed matching sterling tray.

Many other important treasures will come to the auction block on August 25 & 26 at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.  These include paintings by Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Milton Avery, Maurice Utrillo, Bernard Buffet, Edouard Cortes, Waldo Peirce, and Howard Chandler Christy, plus a large collection of important Asian antiques, fine antiquities, Faberge items, and estate jewelry.
