Tough diamond day as Belfast, Searsport come up empty

It was a tough day on the diamonds for Waldo County high school baseball and softball squads on Thursday, May 9 as all four in action were dealt home losses.

Belfast was downed by Ellsworth, while Searsport came up short against Bucksport.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Softball

Bucksport 5, Searsport 1

At Searsport May 9, the Vikings were downed by the Golden Bucks. Searsport scored one run in the sixth inning, while Bucksport plated one in the third, fifth and seventh and two in the sixth.

Leading the hosts at the plate were Abby Stemp (single), Emma Spiegel (RBI), Jenna Keach (single), Mikaela Alley (single, double) and Sarah Gent (run).

For the visitors, Tori Watkins (single, 2 RBIs), Mikayla Tripp (home run, single, 2 runs), Alyssa Maguire (single), Brittney Dewitt (single, RBI), Madison Frazier (single), Abby Hanscom (single) and Alexis Wardwell (run, RBI) paced the offense.

Keach pitched for Searsport, as she allowed seven hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts. Tripp pitched for Bucksport, as she allowed four hits and four walks, with 13 strikeouts.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South, Searsport (3-3, 5.3906 points) is fourth, while Buckfield (7-1, 28.9932 points) is first in the nine-team region. The top six teams qualify for the playoffs.

Baseball

Bucksport 8, Searsport 1

At Searsport May 9, the Vikings were dealt their first loss of the season, this time by the Golden Bucks. Bucksport scored three runs in the first and second innings and two in the fifth, while Searsport plated one in the first.

Daegan Moody (single), Charlie Spiegel (2 singles, run), George Dakin (single, RBI) and Steven Perkins (single) led Searsport at the plate, while Isaac Moore (3 singles, double, run, RBI), Dylan Wight (single, RBI, run), Owen Gaudreau (single, RBI, run), Cam Grindle (single, RBI, run), Ty Giberson (run, RBI), Ryan Howard (single, run), Christian Chase-Hurd (2 runs) Brady Findlay (RBI) keyed Bucksport.

Cody Reynolds, Isaiah Runci, Josh Wright and Spiegel pitched for the Vikings, as the group allowed eight hits and three walks, with five strikeouts. Moore and Giberson pitched for the Golden Bucks, as the duo allowed five hits and two walks, with 13 strikeouts.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South, Searsport (5-1, 29.1295 points) is first in the nine-team region. The top six teams qualify for the playoffs.

Ellsworth 3, Belfast 2

At Belfast May 9, the Eagles got a run in the top of the seventh inning and held off the Lions to remain unbeaten. Belfast scored in the fourth and sixth, while Ellsworth scored in the first, sixth and seventh.

Tanner Veilleux (hit), Luke Hamlin (2 hits, run), Jason Bartlett (run) and Samuel Davis (hit) led Belfast, while Tyler Mitchell (hit, run), Devin Grindle (hit, run), Jackson Curtis (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Hunter Curtis (run) and Michael Palmer (hit) paced Ellsworth at the plate.

Chris Kelley pitched for the Lions, as he allowed six hits and two walks, with two strikeouts. Matt Burnett pitched for the Eagles, as he allowed four hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (5-3, 19.2969 points) is 10th, while Hermon (11-0, 50.3906 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
