Burning off the calories …

Trapani siblings gobble up competition to earn 'Turkey Trot' 5K firsts

Penobscot Bay YMCA's annual post-Thanksgiving event attracts nearly 200

Rockport — Like a rafter of turkeys, they descended on the Penobscot Bay YMCA — and subsequently the streets of Rockport and Camden — on Friday morning, Nov. 24 in an attempt to burn off the calories from too much potato, squash and pumpkin pie, among other holiday culinary treats consumed less than 24 hours earlier, during the 14th annual "Turkey Trot" 5-kilometer road race/walk.

The post-Thanksgiving event, held in sunny, but brisk conditions, attracted a record 188 registrants as people ages 7-82 turned out for a run, jog or brisk walk around the 3.1-mile course.

In the end, one family — the Trapanis — ruled the roost as brother and sister, Ben and Emma, proved the fastest among the large field.

Ben Trapani, 22, finished first overall in 16 minutes and 15 seconds, while Emma Trapani, 19, finished in 19:06, as the first female finisher. She was fifth overall.

The Trapanis are former standout runners at Camden Hills Regional High School.

Jeff Sprague, 35, finished second overall at 17:14, nearly a minute behind Ben. Sprague is one of the finest distance runners to come from the Midcoast and his fast time normally wins most area 5Ks, but not on this day with Ben Trapani in the field.

The second female finisher was Kendra Emery, 38, in 20:30.

Hats, gloves, leggings, sweatpants and jackets to keep out the cold were the norm for many participants, and some wore Thanksgiving attire, including head ornaments of turkey legs (drum sticks), among other neat attire.

There also was a pancake breakfast, to support the Sailfish youth swim team, after the race.

Those who came dressed in Thanksgiving-themed costumes were entered to win a $50 YMCA certificate.

The event began in 2004.

Theo Berez, fitness director at the YMCA and race director, said, "We are very excited about the numbers. All-time high. We had more preregistrations than ever. We ordered more t-shirts than ever."

Berez added that "having a professional timing company was a relief. Race logistics are hard enough and when you have timing issues, it can put a damper on things. We had live results and best yet ... the race began exactly on time. It’s such a blast to see the sea of people at the starting line, horn blows and they are off. I love the picture of the group running down Limerock Street."
