True North Farms provides fresh produce for Mainers in need

Thanks to the hard work of farmers across Maine, including Richard and Sarah Lincoln Harrison, owners of True North Farms in Montville, thousands Mainers who struggle to make ends meet will have fresh vegetables on their tables this holiday season.

True North is a 26-acre MOFGA-certified organic mixed vegetable farm.

The Harrisons recently finished up their annual harvest of mixed vegetables. They have participated in Good Shepherd Food Bank’s Mainers Feeding Mainers program since 2010. In this program, Good Shepherd collaborates with local farms to purchase fresh foods for food pantries, meal programs, and other hunger relief agencies.

Since True North began participating in the program, the Food Bank has purchased more than 13,400 pounds of fresh vegetables from the Harrisons for distribution to Waldo County hunger relief agencies. Products purchased include spinach, cabbage, cucumbers, green beans, and summer and winter squash.

The Harrisons deliver to the Belfast Soup Kitchen, The Game Loft, the Greater Belfast Area Ministerium, East Belfast United Methodist Church, Crossroads to Calvary Church in Morrill, and Liberty Baptist Church Food Pantry.

According to Sarah Lincoln Harrison, “We treat our food pantries the same way we treat our high-end commercial customers. Our pantry clients deserve fresh, organic, nutritious produce.”

According to a press release, Good Shepherd Food Bank works with 70 farms across Maine to purchase and distribute locally grown products for its network of 400 partner hunger relief programs statewide. Year-to-date in 2018, Good Shepherd has distributed 1.8 million pounds of locally sourced food and invested more nearly $700,000 in Maine’s agriculture sector.

“Mainers Feeding Mainers is a reflection of two of the Food Bank’s strongest commitments,” said Kristen Maile, Good Shepherd president. “We are committed to providing Mainers facing hunger with more than just calories — we aim to provide healthy, nourishing food. We also strive to support local communities, and by investing in local farms, we’re able to do just that.”

According to USDA, 14.4 percent of Maine households are food insecure, meaning they lack access to adequate nutritious food. It’s estimated that nearly 21 percent of children in Waldo County live in food insecure households.
