Two day winter storm brings snow and ice

By Staff | Feb 06, 2020

A winter storm arrived Thursday morning bringing 1 to 3 inches of snowfall across the Midcoast resulting in a hazardous morning commute. We saw a lull in the action during the afternoon with pockets of snow changing over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain as temperatures warmed in the upper atmosphere with temperatures remaining near or below freezing at the surface level.

A second wave of heavier and widespread precipitation will move in Thursday night resulting in sleet and freezing rain across the southern half of Maine with snow north. This will result in a glaze of ice across the region Friday morning that will make for treacherous travel and may result in isolated power outages as tree limbs and power lines become weighed down. Winter mix will briefly change back over to snow Friday afternoon and evening before ending overnight as the storm moves east and cold air builds in from the north.

Freezing rain accumulation through Thursday night and Friday morning will range from a trace along the immediate coast to up to 1/3" just a few miles inland with isolated locations up to 1/2" of ice possible. Additional snow late Friday will range from a trace to 2" and make icy surfaces extra slippery.

We'll see clearing into the weekend as high pressure builds in ushering in a shot of bitter cold with highs down into the 20s and overnight low hitting the single digits Saturday night. Temperatures will rebound slightly on Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds followed by another chance of rain and snow mix on Monday.
