Two dead, one seriously injured in Liberty crash

Second fatal crash in two days on same stretch of Route 3
Nov 28, 2018

A woman and a child were killed and a teenager seriously injured Wednesday evening when two vehicles collided on Route 3 in Liberty.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Wednesday night a car crossed the centerline on Route 3 and struck an oncoming pickup truck head-on.

Janice Minson, 64, of Verona Island and 9-year-old Kolby Adams of Hope were killed in the crash. Troopers said Minson crossed the centerline and collided with the oncoming pickup in which Kolby was a passenger. She died shortly after arrival at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast and the boy was killed instantly, McCausland said.

A second passenger in the pickup, 15-year-old Samuel Levesque of Liberty, was seriously injured, according to police. He is being treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland for multiple injuries, believed not to be life-threatening.

Evan West, 20, of Liberty was driving the pickup. He was treated and released from WCGH. West was friends with his two passengers and they had left a nearby home to go to the store.

There is no immediate explanation why Minson's Pontiac Vibe crossed the center line, McCausland said. She was headed home following an out-of-state vacation.

The crash took place about 5:30 p.m. and closed down Route 3. Detours were put in place as a team from the Maine State Police investigated the accident, McCausland said.

The site of Wednesday’s crash is just a quarter-mile from the site of a fatal crash Tuesday on Route 3. A truck driven by William Chadwick, 55, of Oakland, was struck by a rented box truck driven Dusan Dokic, of Spanaway, Washington, in front of the state park. Chadwick died in the crash.
