Unbeaten Lions purr, Mustangs blanked in Sept. 12 stick play

Belfast races past Nokomis, moves to top of region

With one Waldo County high school team undefeated and the other winless early in the season, the Belfast and Mount View field hockey squads continued their respective runs in home games on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The Lions posted a 6-0 shutout win over Nokomis of Newport, while the Mustangs were dealt a 10-0 loss against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

The following is a recap of both contests:

Belfast 6, Nokomis 0

At Belfast Sept. 12, the Lions exploded for five second-half goals en route to a lopsided win over the Warriors. Belfast led 1-0 at halftime.

Leading the Lion offense was Kayci Faulkingham (2 goals), Lindsay Bruns (2 goals), Hannah Sanderson (goal, assist), Lauren Blood (goal), Cassie Jackson (2 assists) and Mallory Tibbetts (assist).

Brooke Richards made four saves in the cage for Belfast, while Chelsea Crockett made six saves in the goal for the Warriors.

Belfast held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The Belfast jayvees also posted a 3-0 win over the Warriors.

Maine Central Institute 10, Mount View 0

At Thorndike Sept. 12, the Huskies prevailed with a lopsided win over the winless Mustangs. MCI led 6-0 at halftime.

Leading the MCI offense was Addy Williams (3 goals, 2 assists), Alyson Green (assist), Victoria Friend (2 goals), Madison Hartley (goal), Jill Frost (goal), Vivian Duncome (goal), April McAlpine (assist), Madison Fitts (goal), Allison Hughes (goal).

Alexis Bowman made 16 saves on 24 shots and Thurston Illingworth four saves on five shots in a combined effort in the cage for Mount View. Elisabeth Taylor made eight saves on nine shots for MCI.

The Huskies held a 12-1 edge in penalty corners.
