I know everyone has been inundated with COVID-19 news and information so I won't go into too much here; I will let you know how it impacts you locally.

The Town Office is open by appointment only. Please call 948-3763. In addition, the front door is locked and we are allowing one person at at time. At this time, the Unity Town Office will only complete transactions for Unity residents. We understand the frustration many will have; however, it is important that we limit the traffic into the office.

Town meeting is postponed and the date and location are to be determined.

At this time the municipal election for selectman will continue as normal. There will be precautions set in place and staff is limited during this election. Only one person will be allowed in to vote at a time. Please be patient. Absentee ballots that are out need to be returned by March 27, at 8 p.m.

The Town of Unity participates in many online services -- vehicle registrations, ATV, boat, snowmobile, hunting and fishing licenses and property tax payments. Please visit the website for the links: unityme.org.

There are three Facebook pages with constantly updated information as the virus relates to local issues. Please visit "Unity, Maine Citizens United," "Unity Responds" or "Unity Unites." Last night, March 19, a group of citizens met at the fire station to discuss volunteer opportunities.

The restaurants in town are closed to eat-in dining. Curbside, delivery and pickup are options. Call your favorite restaurant ahead of time to find out their hours, as many have temporarily changed.

Unity Shop 'n' Save, in an effort to support their older (over 60) and at-risk customers, will be temporarily opening early on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6 to 7 a.m. for the next two weeks. Then business as normal from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Chase Toys' showroom is closed for the next two weeks. Staff are still there to work on your equipment and you should call first.

The Good Steward Thrift Store was scheduled to be open April 1, but that has been delayed. They are still accepting donations and those can be placed in the shed.

The Unity Area Recycling Center is temporarily closed.

When you get your census paperwork in the mail, try to complete it online or by return mail as soon as you can. This will lessen the need for people going door-to-door to complete it for you.

The Open Door is still serving dinners on Thursdays as usual. However, they are making changes to their delivery system. Beginning at 11 a.m. they will be using the drive-through method for folks at the Community Center. There also will be meals placed in the common rooms of Leisure Homes, Sandy Stream and School Street complexes. As always, these are free meals. They are committed to serving the community.

The college gymnasium and library are now closed to the public.

Let me say how proud I am of our community. Everything is very fluid right now and change is hard. Know that your community cares about you. If you are in need, please feel free to call the Town Office or get in touch with any of the selectmen or EMA Director Jason Johnson. When I begged Jason to take that long-vacated position I promised him it would be easy; I told him one meeting per month and they also provided dinner. Well, that was then....
