It's that time of the year when it's hot one minute, cold the next. Yesterday I had the windows open; today I ran the furnace. My summer flowers are still doing very well so I haven't emptied the pots into the compost pile yet.

Mary Leaming has left her post as the director of the Unity Barn Raisers to pursue more education in the social work field. She has been a great asset to the community during her tenure and we wish her all the best. A new director has yet to be named.

The town of Unity would like to thank three members of the Unity College Woodsmen team for their help in bringing in the swimming dock. Matt, Brody and Nick made short work of the chore, and after, I regaled them with some stories of when I was on the team in the late '80s. During one meet I had to choose between pole climb and tobacco spit for distance. Since I am afraid of heights, I chose the latter. After much practice and turning green I placed second with a distance of 13 feet!

The town of Unity and Unity Shop 'n' Save are collecting donations for the Waterville Area Humane Society. There are boxes available for your donation of quality canned and dry food, cleaning supplies, and gently used towels and pillowcases. Monetary donations are also accepted.

Last week there was a single case in Unity that involved 12 cats that had to be transported to the Humane Society. I will spare you the gruesome and graphic details. Of the 12, seven survived and they are in need of intensive and costly rehabilitation. We also thank ACO Crystal Nichols and Sheriff Trafton for their rapid response and professionalism.

There will be a free rabies clinic Saturday, Oct. 20, 9 to 11 a.m., at the Brooks Fire Station.

The winner of the Apple Pie Contest was Kim Hardy. Jason Johnson, Mary Anderson and I had a very hard job choosing among the entries, but it certainly was a task we relished! We hope Kim enjoys her $25 gift certificate from Mammie's.

My oldest nephew Josh and his son Hunter have moved to the area. They are staying with Matt and Lucia until they get settled. Josh should be easily recognizable, as he is the spitting image of his father.
