Unity Town News

The sun is streaming though the windows; I can see the snow melting off the roof. I'm not a big fan of winter, and this early onslaught of bad weather has been depressing. I'm now in the throes of Christmas decorating and the cleaning that accompanies it. Some people romanticize the gathering of the Christmas tree, trudging through the woods, carrying axe and saw, dragging it out behind them through the snow. I did my share of that. I even got stabbed in the face by a Christmas tree as I was falling over a rock wall. Now I just go to Mac's Hardware and point out the one I like and they throw it in the truck.

I'm looking forward to the craft fair at Mount View tomorrow. For me, it's like a social event and there will be some of The Market of Unity vendors peddling their wares. I know Larry and Betsy King will be there with King's Crafts and Kathryn Piper will be there with her Season's Natural Body Care.

There will be a window insert workshop on Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Thorndike Town Office. You will need to measure the inside of your windows to within 1/4 inch. All materials will be provided. There is a minimal cost of $1.50 per square foot. Please RSVP by Dec. 5 to Unity Barn Raisers at 948-9005.

Unity Pond Pottery's 20-percent off (all in-stock) Christmas sale will be happening from Dec. 10th to the 24th. They are open Monday through Saturday, 10-4. FMI: Wendy or Espo at 948- 2400.

We're getting a jump start on the 2019 municipal budget. The Unity Budget Committee will be meeting Dec. 6, 6:30pm. at the Town Office. They will be reviewing the funding requests submitted from public agencies. These meetings are always open to the public.

A reminder that the Unitel office has relocated back to the old office on Main Street. There is a payment deposit slot inside the lobby.

It's that time again! The 2018 Christmas Bird Count is just around the corner. The date of this year's Unity CBC is Saturday, Dec. 15. You can either do field birding or watch your feeders. Please contact Tom Aversa at tom.aversa@gmail.com if you are interested. I'm hoping my red-bellied woodpecker sticks around so I can add it to my list this year.

The Snowdusters Snowmobile Club in Unity could use your help with membership and trail work. When using the trail system, please stay on marked trails, and keep in mind that trails are not always mutually inclusive (e.g., ATV trails might not be OK for snowmobiles and vice versa; horses are not necessarily welcomed on snowmobile or hiking trails) and please respect the landowners.

Cemetery Committee volunteers needed. The Cemetery Committee has been getting older and smaller and what people remain are no longer able to devote as much time. The committee meets two or three times per year and makes decisions and recommendations regarding the care of our seven cemeteries. You can contribute to the perpetual care of our cemeteries. Please let us know at the Town Office if you are interested.

The Depot Store, Albion Mini Mart and Hilltop Store are all holding drawings for large Christmas stockings filled with gifts. All you need to do is put your name and number on your receipt and drop it in the box.

Condolences to the family and friends of Shawn Shorey.
