Summer has surely flown! Back-to-school sales have already hit the stores along with Halloween candy and pumpkin spice everything. I finally harvested my first cucumber after the long wet and cold spring delayed planting.

Unity Fire Department Open House will be held Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local law enforcement and EMS will also be in attendance. Unity Fire Department will be hosting demos at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. All are welcome to come check out the station, meet your local firefighters and "Sparky" the fire dog. The fire station is located on Firehouse Lane off School Street near Mac's Hardware.

We had two special guests at the selectmen's meeting Tuesday night. Aubri and Riley Bosco made a wonderful presentation and gifted the town a "Little Free Library" that will be located at the Town Office. It's already stocked with some great children's books; great job, girls!

Now, we just need to get "The Pokey Little Puppy" for my brother Matthew.

The Unity Area Regional Recycling Center can no longer accept glass for the time being. They will keep us all posted when and if this should change. They also request that you make sure to clean your recyclables, especially dog/cat food cans. By ensuring your recycling is clean and dry, it allows them to mitigate contamination issues in the end-products, mitigates rodent issues, and ensures they can continue to serve you to the fullest of their abilities. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Several more local farms have been added to unity.farmdrop.us. Remember to order by Thursday for Friday pickup at the Community Center. The Market of Unity is held at the Town Office on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Always room for more vendors. The Amish ladies have been making and selling homemade ice cream. There's a couple of picnic tables in the shade where you can enjoy some ice cream or maybe some of Evan Shedyak's lemonade. The farmers' market is still held on Saturdays at the Community Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Unity Barn Raisers are seeking volunteers to help with gleaning. This initiative redirects perfectly good produce that otherwise would be left in the field. Contact them at ubr@uninets.net or 948-9005.
