Searsmont — A Facebook page created June 4, called "Town of Searsmont Maine," has all the trappings of a legitimate source for Town Office news.

Community events, town meeting information, news on local businesses, lost animals and political information have all been posted on the site.

On Nov. 11, the site posted an opinion piece beginning with "The Town is horrified," expressing the poster's view of the new town columnists.

With lines like "The Town feels..." and with the name of Facebook page "Town of Searsmont Maine," the page suggests the information is coming directly from the Town Office.

According to Town Clerk Kathy Hoey, the Facebook page is not sanctioned by the town and does not represent the views of the Town Office or the selectmen.

"I really don't know who it might be," Hoey said, "It's clearly somebody local."

Hoey said she reached out to the Facebook page in a private message and asked who was running the page. After posting on the page, she said she was blocked by the page's administrator.

While she said the intentions of the page's owner are probably good, the Nov. 11 post crossed a line.

"This is not a town Facebook page," Hoey said, and directed residents to the town website at to get town information and to contact the office directly.

The Journal submitted a message to the Facebook page requesting to speak on this topic, but has not received a response as of this time.
