Welcome Home to Chestnut Street baptist Church!

Uprooted -  Adam Kohlstrom

Luke 17:1-10

How would you summarize today’s sermon to someone else?

How is God speaking to us? How will you respond (Mt. 7:24-27; James 1:22)?

17:1. What are some ways we might be guilty of “tempting” others to sin (cf. 1 Timothy 4:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2,6; Galatians 2:11-14)?

17:2 (cf. Matthew 5:29-30; 18:7-9). What hinders us from treating sin this seriously? What would it look like to take sin this seriously in your own life? in our life together?

17:3. Jesus says, first “pay attention to yourselves” then to the sin of your brother or sister. Jesus teaches us to assume our need for forgiveness, “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matt.6:12) and our Church Covenant confesses our need: “Acknowledging our human frailties and our need for forgiveness…” Why do we struggle to confess our need?

17:3-4. “Because we are lovers of ourselves… unwilling to see our own errors, therefore unlikely to amend them. Whereas our friends will, with a meek and impartial spirit, show us our faults” (James Hervey). How does Jesus’ command challenge our individualistic spirituality? our “live and let live” attitude? our reluctance to “get entangled with others”? [see Proverbs 27:5-6,9,17; Matthew 18:15; 2Timothy 2:24-26; Hebrews 3:13; James 5:16,19-20]

17:3-4. Rebuke. Repent. Release (Forgive). Repeat. With which of these steps do you most struggle? Why?

17:5-6. The disciples believed obedience to Jesus’ commands here would take great faith. How much faith does Jesus say is necessary? What does it mean: “You do not need a great faith, but faith in a great God” (Missionary Hudson Taylor)?

17:6. It takes but a little faith the great God to see uprooted the most stubborn of sins and the most obstinate root of bitterness and unforgiveness. What will you pray is uprooted by the power and grace of Jesus today?

17:7-10. How does Jesus’ warning about pride speak to you?
