Faith Temple Church in Belfast, where I lead the veterans' ministry, is hosting its annual free veterans appreciation cookout and concert Sunday, Sept. 10, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the church, 193 Lincolnville Ave., Belfast. In the event of rain, we'll move indoors.

During the planning stages, we realized the appreciation event this year would fall on the day before 9/11, so it seemed fitting that we bring the community together to extend our appreciation to our first responders as well.

So this year we will honor veterans, active duty military, police, firefighters and EMTs — all the people who keep us safe — and show our appreciation for your service and sacrifice. We invite the community and all first responders, as well as veterans and military, to attend. All are welcome, from across Waldo County and beyond.

We'll have a ceremony with a color guard and singing of the national anthem. The Mainely Country Band will entertain, and we're hoping to have a firetruck and police car to show the children, in addition to other kids' activities. And, of course, the cookout, all at no charge. Contact me with any questions. And please come!
