Belfast — Members of Randall Collins VFW Post 3108 will commemorate fallen service members, putting flags on grave sites at Grove Cemetery Friday, May 22, at 9 a.m. The event will honor not only veterans, but anyone with ties to service, including firefighters and police.

Post Operations Manager Jim Roberts said this year’s event will look different because of COVID-19 guidelines. “We will modify it to comply with social distancing,” he said.

According to Roberts, Sheriff Jeffrey Trafton and Mayor Eric Sanders have agreed to be in attendance.

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, members of Post 3108 are also planning two services. The first is at 9:30 a.m. at the VFW building, 34 Field St., in Belfast. Three-war veteran Carmine Pecorelli will lay a commemorative wreath with a 21-gun salute, and a bugler will play “Taps.”

The service will be modified, employing only three riflemen for the gun salute and three flag-bearers instead of five, per pandemic guidelines.

At 10 a.m. the procession will head to Grove Cemetery, where it will be joined by the Patriot Riders and active duty members of the Coast Guard for a service honoring all who have served.

The event will take place near the road. At this service the public is invited to watch from the sidewalk or road and is asked to observe social distancing. Pecorelli will also lay one wreath at this site.
