Unity — With ongoing developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, Unity College will hold a virtual commencement this year.

According to a letter posted on the college website, President Dr. Melik Peter Khoury said that while the idea that commencement might not happen this year was “just not acceptable,”  given the current situation, the annual recognition and celebration held in the school's gymnasium was not feasible.

Watching graduates come back to campus and share their experiences, he said, as well as meeting many of the distance learning students for the first time, are hallmarks of commencement.

Director of Marketing Alecia Sudmeyer, along with a task force, coordinated plans to move forward with a remote commencement. Students were sent diplomas and robes and encouraged to take photos displaying their achievement. The photos can then be submitted and used in the virtual ceremony where family and friends can watch and communicate with each other, along with faculty, throughout the event.

The college has planned several events throughout the year, with the first taking place Friday, May 8. On this day, a Virtual Awards Recognition event will honor graduates who have excelled in academics, athletics and overall student success. Members of the faculty will discuss criteria for the awards and speak about each recipient’s achievements.

On Saturday, May 9, starting at 11 a.m., the college will host an online commencement celebrating and acknowledging all graduates.

Then, on Aug. 1, barring any unforeseen developments with COVID-19, the college will host an in-person commencement at 90 Quaker Hill Road, similar to the traditional May commencement, for any graduate who can attend.

Last, for those unable to attend the Aug. 1 commencement, any 2020 graduate who would like to march at the Dec. 18 graduation is invited to join the event at Unity College.
