The midcoast-based a cappella vocal ensemble VoXX: Voice of Twenty will present its annual summer concert series with four performances in June and July. This year’s offering is titled Music from the British Isles; it focuses on works by a selection of renowned choral composers from British history, ranging from Byrd to Britten and beyond.

Music Director Matthew Smith, who hails from Croyden, England,  said, “I have wanted VoXX to sing a concert originating entirely from my native Britain for a long time, so the idea of a program based on British choral music was a slightly self-indulgent one. I am proud of Britain’s choral legacy and the continuing role the British choral tradition plays in producing some of the finest ensembles in the world.

“To put this series together, we were, of course, faced with an almost endless list of possible composers and works, so we chose to shine a spotlight on some of the preeminent choral composers through British history. Renaissance masterpieces by Byrd and Tallis tell the story of reformation in Tudor England. Henry Purcell highlights the grandeur of the Baroque. Musical titans such as Elgar, Holst, and Vaughan Williams, whose works helped put British choral music back on the map in the first half of the 20thcentury, are a focus. There is also a strong royal connection with several pieces, notably Britten’s “Choral Dances from Gloriana.”

To cast further light on the thinking that goes into the group’s program choices, VoXX will offer pre-concert talks designed to expand upon the program notes. These will begin one-half hour before each performance.
