Rockland — After a short break to celebrate the Fourth of July festivities, the District 2 Little League 9- and 10-year-old baseball double-elimination tournament continued to chug along Thursday through Sunday, July 5-8, as three teams remain in the title hunt.

And one of those squads — Waldo County (2-0) — punched its ticket to the championship game on Sunday as it survived a late scare from Oceanside (1-1) to collect an 8-7, seven-inning victory.

Then, later in the day, Medomak Valley (2-1) had its opportunity to light up the scoreboard to the tune of a 13-3, five-inning victory over Five Town (1-2) in an elimination game.

Five Town advanced to face Medomak Valley after it collected a 25-7, four-inning victory over Lincoln County (0-2) in an elimination game on Thursday, July 5.

The following is a recap of the latest reported contests:

Waldo County 8, Oceanside 7 (7 inns.)

At Rockland July 8, Waldo County survived a late rally from Oceanside and advanced to the championship game after an extra-inning win. Oceanside scored two runs in the second inning and five in the seventh to tie the score, while Waldo County scored single runs in the first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, in addition to a three-run fourth.

Leading Waldo County at the plate were Knowlton (2 singles, run), Powers (single, run), Littlefield (single), Tripp (run), Carson (single, run), Ha (run), Thornley (single, 3 runs) and Bryant (single).

For Oceanside, Hoose (single, run), Pratt (single, run), Tripp (run), Guptill (single, run), Easton Willis (single, 2 runs) and Whytock (single, run) paced the offense.

Hoose, Hamilton and Garitz worked the hill for Oceanside, as the trio allowed seven hits and six walks, with 13 strikeouts. Knowlton and Powers pitched for Waldo County, as the teammates allowed five hits and five walks, with 15 strikeouts.

Waldo County took a 2-0 lead after Knowlton and Thornley scampered home on passed balls, but Oceanside responded with a pair of run-scoring groundouts by Hoose and Plate — which plated Guptill and Willis — to knot the score.

Waldo County distanced itself from Oceanside for the time being with a three-run fourth with a single by Thornley to plate Carson, while Ha and Thornley came in on passed balls.

Waldo County continued to distance itself after Powers singled and scored on a error in the fifth and a groundout by Knowlton to plate Thornley to make the score 7-2.

However, Oceanside did not go quietly in the bottom of the sixth as it came back to tie the score after a furious five run, two-out rally.

Willis and Whytock plated Tripp and Willis with back-to-back singles, while Hoose and Pratt reached — and scored — on errors to put Oceanside down 7-6.

Then Pratt, on a heads-up play scampered home as the ball was being thrown back to the pitcher to knot the score.

Waldo County scored the game-winning run after Tripp drew a walk and came in on a passed ball to take an 8-7 lead. Oceanside made it interesting as it got the tying run to third base, but the final batter struck out to end the game.

Medomak Valley 13, Five Town 3 (5 inns.)

At Rockland July 8, Medomak Valley built an insurmountable lead and bounced Five Town from the tournament. Medomak Valley scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and six in the fifth, while Five Town scored runs in the first, third and fifth innings.

Leading Medomak at the plate were Thomas (3 runs), Herring (run), Blake (2 singles, 3 runs), Tucker Brown (triple, run), Wilshire (run), Thomas Brown (run), Hood (run), Hutchins (run) and Wyatt Simmons (run).

For Five Town, Christie (single), Whitley (triple, 2 runs), Pierce (single) and Marshall (single, run) paced the offense.

Blake and Thomas pitched for Medomak Valley, as the two allowed four hits and five walks, with 10 strikeouts. Whitley, Day-Lynch and Thomas pitched for Five Town, allowing three hits and 12 walks, with eight strikeouts.

Five Town 25, Lincoln County 7 (4 inns.)

At Rockland July 5, Five Town pulled away with an impressive 12-run fourth inning and staved off elimination with a win over Lincoln County.

Five Town also scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and eight in the third, while Lincoln County tallied three in the first, three in the second and another in the fourth.

Leading Five Town at the plate were Christie (3 singles, 4 runs), Whitley (single, 3 runs), Ames (2 singles, 4 runs), Pierce (2 singles, 3 runs), Domareki (2 singles, run), Day-Lynch (single, 2 runs), Harris (2 runs), Leadbetter (single, 3 runs), Hall (2 runs) and Talbot (run).

For Lincoln County, Hendrick (single, 2 runs), Brewer (2 runs), Ober (single, 2 runs), Farrin (single, run) and Pierpont (2 singles) paced the offense.

Ames and Christie pitched for Five Town, as the duo allowed five hits, six walks and three hit batters, with eight strikeouts. Farrin, Shirley, Hendrick and Gamage pitched for Lincoln County, as the group allowed 12 hits, 17 walks and two hit batters, with seven strikeouts.
