Waldo Town Clerk Sandra Smith will be on vacation from April 11 through April 19. The Town Office will be open Tuesday, April 10, from noon to 6 p.m. On Friday, April 20, the Town Office will be open with hours mirroring regular Thursday hours, which are from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 3 to 6 p.m.

By now, most readers have read last week’s Journal article regarding mail delivery problems here in Waldo. While progress is being made, the situation has not yet resolved and I continue to hear from people with serious mail problems. As mentioned in a previous column, readers are welcome to send me their complaints and I will forward them to the proper federal authorities.

In the garden

With winter still lingering, spring yet seems terribly far away. But for those who start their own plants from seeds, planting time for many varieties has already arrived. I sowed my tomato seeds on April 5, which means that by late May, my plants should be well advanced and ready to set outside.

Other vegetables, too, should be started inside now. So check those seed packets to determine when to start this season’s vegetable plants.

Perchin’ prediction

Until warmer weather arrives, all bets are off regarding fishing. My opening day efforts went unrewarded, as were previous attempts to catch a trout or two. Water is high and cold and fishing, at least for now, seems an unprofitable endeavor.

Book revision

My newly revised book, “Wild Plants of Maine,” has made it to the printing house and my publisher tells me it will be out for sale in only a few short weeks. Previous editions of this book have received excellent reviews and, hopefully, the eight new chapters and several new recipes will keep that trend alive.

Weekly quote

This timely quote comes from William Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”:

“ Oh, how this spring resembleth

The uncertain glory of an April day!

Which now shows all the beauty of the sun

And by and by a cloud takes all away.”
