Belfast — More than 200 people gathered Oct. 26 at the Belfast Boathouse for a walk-a-thon to raise funds for Sonja Abbott, a local woman battling breast cancer.

Abbott’s quarterback grandson led the walk with other members of the Belfast Area High School’s football team and raised more than $3,000. Participants walked a total of 4 miles on the Harbor Walk part of the Rail Trail and back.

Children enjoyed face painting, vendors sold food and supporters sold shirts labeled “Sonja Strong.” Abbott’s daughter-in-law, Meghan Abbott, planned the event as a way to show appreciation and solidarity.

Since surgery to remove a tumor before it spread through her body, Sonja Abbott has been receiving chemotherapy treatments that will be followed by up to two months of radiation to kill any remaining cancer cells. She left the walk-a-thon early as a precaution for her weakened immune system.

She said her symptoms have been manageable and attributes her positive attitude to her strong faith and supporters throughout her treatment.

“You’re either going to get better or bitter,” Abbott said in an Oct. 13 interview. “And if you put your faith in God, it will get better.”
