Wednesday outage affects 6,000; reportedly damages appliances, equipment

Belfast — Early Wednesday morning, nearly 6,000 electricity customers lost power because of a problem in a west side substation in Belfast, according to Gail Rice, Avangrid corporate communications officer.

At 1:52 a.m. Sept. 26, Rice said, a problem occurred with an insulator at a Belfast substation that affected a total of 5,987 customers. The malfunction affected feed substations in Belfast, Belmont, Lincolnville, Montville, Morrill, Northport and Searsmont.

Approximately two hours after the initial issue, 3,744 households were put back online; by 4:25 a.m. power was restored to all households, she said.

Rice said the traffic light at the intersection of the entrances to athenahealth and Renys Plaza on Route 3, which has been blinking yellow since the outage, is the responsibility of the Department of Transportation. She could not say when it would be fixed.

Electricians and heating contractors scrambled to fix circuit breakers, heat pumps and boilers that were no longer working, according to one resident's email to The Republican Journal. The resident blamed a power surge for the damage to the appliances and equipment.

Customers can file claims through their insurance companies, Rice noted, or they can go to cmpco.com and type "claim" in the search box to fill out an Avangrid form for any property damage.

The cause of the outage is still being investigated, Rice said. Avangrid is the parent company of Central Maine Power Co. (CMP).
