Wesley E. Smith

Searsport — Wesley E. Smith, 89, died peacefully at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on Saturday, Nov.17. He was born in Waldo on Feb.17,1923, a son of the late Bertha and Edward Smith.

Wesley graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at many different jobs including at the local pool and billiards parlor in Belfast and at Chemtron Corp in Searsport. He retired in 1989 from the U.S. Fuel Deport in Searsport. As a young man he was known as a darn good pool and billiards player. Wesley was an avid reader and enjoyed watching all sports on T.V. He took great pleasure in keeping his lawn finely manicured and mowed them by hand until he was 86 years of age.

Wesley is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nephews and nieces to include nephews Owen Smith and wife Brenda of Belfast; Roger Smith and wife Beverly of Searsport, David Smith and wife Leona of Hartford, Conn.; Dennis Smith and wife Karin of Silver Springs Fla.; Nieces Angela Noyes and Michelle Quin of Waldo County; Janet Buzzell, Joan Mishou, Geneva Lessard, Bertha Dore, Janice Dorman, Debbie Grindle, Sandra DePhilippo and Ruthie Hamm. Nephews Vernon Grindle, Owen Grindle, Russell Grindle, Gary Grindle and Lenora Jones, Great Nieces Kelli Grindle-Stone of Belfast; Lyn Dyer of Northport and a great Nephew Roger Wesley Smith of Searsport. Great, great nieces Karagen Stone of Belfast; Emily Dyer, Kelci Dyer and Peyton Dyer all of Northport and Shane Grindle of Belfast.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Owen Edward Smith, Carlton Smith, Vernon "Bud" Grindle and Russell Grindle. By his loving companion of 38 years, Helen Smith, Nephew Carlton "Stretch" Smith and infant Jake Dyer of Northport. Wesley was also predeceased by a very good friend, nephew-in-law Lou Lessard of Belfast and Ricky Lanphier of Searsport who helped to take care of his lawn and also was a great friend.

A graveside service for family and friends with military honors will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 1:30 p.m. in the Elmwood Cemetery, East Main Street in Searsport, officiated by Pastor Rick Lambert.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Waldo County Home Health Care c/o Waldo County Hospital or to The Maine Veterans Home 310 Cony Street Augusta, Maine.
