The summer edition of Elle Decor Magazine has selected the Whitehall Inn in Camden as one of four recommenced places to stay on the entire Maine Coast.

The magazine, which is read by more than two million people in five continents, features a guide to the Maine coast in its July/August edition.

The magazine takes readers on a tour of the coast, with emphasis on Portland to Bar Harbor. Camden’s harbour is cited “as one of the prettiest on the Eastern Seaboard.” Shout-outs also go out to belted Galloway cows and the Children’s Chapel in Rockport.

The Whitehall Inn have rooms that “have been updated with plush mattresses and flat-screen TVs, but the vibe is pure New England,” says Elle Decor.

The short list of “Where to Stay” also includes the Pomegranite Inn in Portland and the Island Inn on Monhegan. The only other lodging establishment on the recommended list is the Inn at Oceans Edge in Lincolnville.

The Whitehall Inn, with its 40 rooms, is one of the larger lodging facilities in the area. While known for its long history and many famous guests, the inn continues to offer moderate pricing, a well-known full menu breakfast and fine affordable dining that is open to the public.

The inn this year is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the “discovery” of Edna St. Vincent Millay, one of America’s most famous poets. Millay, a Camden resident, recited a poem before enthralled guests of the inn in 1912, and this launched her to international fame.

Two movies, Peyton Place, nominated for 9 Oscars, and Stephen King’s Thinner were both filmed at the inn.

During its 112 seasons, the inn has hosted dozens of recognizable “rich and famous” visitors, including a King, a US President, many Hollywood stars and sports icons, as well as noted newsmen and TV personalities.
