Slide presentation and talk by local botanist, photographer and educator Wanda Garland, “Spring and Summer Wildflowers in Maine,” part of Penobscot Shores' free Enrichment Series for adults age 50-plus. Register at 338-2332.

Garland’s colorful slides depicting wild blooms in all their glory will be the centerpiece of the educational program. Garland will also offer insights into the many surprising ways Maine’s wildflowers have been used for food, medicine, and fiber.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Aroostook County in the 1940s and 1950s, Garland learned from her parents how to identify the flowers and trees growing in the woods and fields around their home as well as their traditional uses as handed down by generations of native peoples. “We were so connected,” she recalls. “Our lives followed the flow of seasons.”
