We'll miss you, Deb

It's with a very heavy heart that I write of the passing of our long-time employee Deborah "Shorty" Hoover, who lost her battle to ALS at her home in Winterport on Nov. 21.

Deb was born and raised in Ohio. She served in the Navy in Japan as a radioman. After serving, Deb moved to New Hampshire, where she raised her son as a single parent. She worked at Intel for 15 years, where she met her lifetime partner, Dennis, and the two of them eventually moved to Winterport. Once settled, she saw an opening at the Town Office and served as town clerk for over 11 years.

As town clerk, Deb was instrumental in advancing the town in various ways. One aspect of that was completing the training to be able to issue heavy truck license plates. She also played a critical role as a dispatcher for the Winterport Fire Department and Ambulance Service. As a dispatcher, she provided direction and assistance to first responders.

Deb's expertise in town matters will go unmatched, and the pride that she took in her job radiated through her work. Her witty demeanor, her sense of humor, and her gentle yet stern soul will be missed.

I've always admired her prowess as a municipal official. She truly was an inspiration and role model to me at the start of my career for the town of Winterport. My prayers are with Dennis and her family during this time.

Live Nativity Pageant

The Live Nativity Pageant will be taking place Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, at the Union Meeting House at 7 p.m. both days. This will be the 51st consecutive year of this portrayal and it is a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas season. If you or anyone you know would like to help or participate, please call Mark Fitzpatrick at 223-4967.

Wagner Pride Pack Community Christmas Festival

The third annual Wagner Pride Pack Community Christmas Festival will take place Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The proceeds will benefit the Wager student pantry, as well as various other school programs. They will be featuring a Christmas tree raffle, craft fair, and will be serving breakfast and lunch.

Winterport Open Stage

Winterport Open Stage recently announced that their spring production will be "Charlotte's Web," adapted by Joseph Robinette, and based on the book by E.B. White. Auditions will be held in February. They're seeking children, teen and adult actors. The show will be running April 26 through May 5.

Diaper drive

Waldo County Diaper Closet has placed a collection box at the Town Office and is collecting diapers for those in need in our area. Diapers can be dropped off during regular business hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Until next week, that's all from the only place on earth called "Winterport."
