With postseason on horizon, Belfast looks to play its best

Despite winless mark, Mount View also gears up for league playoffs

The high school golf regular season has finished and league playoffs and postseason tournaments are on-deck as links teams gear up to make a run for hardware.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Belfast had one final regular-season match, against Nokomis of Newport, and won 8-1, which helped determine the final Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference standings and playoff matches in Class B North, while Mount View's regular-season slate has been completed.

Lion Tommy Walker helped Belfast secure a win over Medomak Valley of Waldoboro with a hole-in-one on the par-3, 136-yard fifth hole of Rockland Golf Club (see other story), as the Lions won 6.5-2.5 on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The KVAC Class B North and South standings are final.

In Class B South the playoff seeds are: No. 1 Leavitt of Turner (10-0, 84 points), No. 2 Medomak Valley (7-3, 55 points), No. 3 Lincoln Academy of Newcastle (7-3, 55 points), No. 4 Gardiner (6-4, 46.5 points), No. 5 Maranacook of Readfield (3-6, 38 points), No. 6 Erskine Academy of South China (2-8, 29.5 points) and No. 7 Morse of Bath (1-8, 7.5 points).

The Class B South playoff matches are: No. 1 Leavitt receives a bye; No. 2 Medomak Valley (by virtue of head-to-head tiebreaker with Lincoln Academy) will host No. 7 Morse on Thursday, Sept. 19 or Friday, Sept. 20; No. 3 Lincoln Academy will host No. 6 Erskine Academy on Thursday, Sept. 19 or Friday, Sept. 20 (winners from the No. 2 versus No. 7 matchup and No. 3 versus No. 6 will play at site of best seed on Monday, Sept. 23); No. 4 Gardiner will host No. 5 Maranacook on Friday, Sept. 20 (winner will play at No. 1 Leavitt on Monday, Sept. 23).

In Class B North the playoff seeds are: No. 1 Belfast (8-2, 63 points, No. 2 Waterville (7-3, 61.5 points), No. 3 Oceanside (7-3, 61.5 points), No. 4 Lawrence of Fairfield (4-5, 45.5 points), No. 5 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield (4-6, 31.5 points), No. 6 Nokomis of Newport (2-7, 18 points) and No. 7 Mount View of Thorndike (0-9, 8 points).

The result of the Belfast versus Nokomis match determined the top seed for the playoffs. The Lions won and also earned a first-round bye.

Thus, the playoff matches are: No. 7 Mount View at No. 2 Waterville on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 6 Nokomis at No. 3 Oceanside (winners of these two matches will play at site of best seed on Monday, Sept. 23); No. 5 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield at No. 4 Lawrence (winner plays at No. 1 Belfast on Monday, Sept. 23).

In Class A South the playoff seeds are: No. 1 Mount Ararat of Topsham (10-0, 80.5 points), No. 2 Edward Little of Auburn (8-2, 67 points), No. 3 Lewiston (6-4, 54.5 points), No. 4 Brunswick (3-7, 29 points), No. 5 Camden Hills (2-8, 27 points) and No. 6 Oxford Hills of South Paris (1-9, 12 points).

The Class A South playoff matches are: No. 6 Oxford Hills at No. 3 Lewiston on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 5 Camden Hills at No. 4 Brunswick on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 4/No. 5 North winner at No. 1 Messalonskee of Oakland on Monday, Sept. 23; No. 2/No. 7 winner versus No. 3/No. 6 winner (at site of best seed on Monday, Sept. 23).

Winners of the North matches advance to the KVAC Class A shootout on at Brunswick Golf Club on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a 2:30 p.m. shotgun start.

In Class A North the playoff seeds are: No. 1 Messalonskee (8-2, 66 points), No. 2 Hampden Academy (8-2, 61.5 points), No. 3 Brewer (7-2, 52 points), No. 4 Cony of Augusta (6-4, 52.5 points), No. 5 Bangor (3-7, 42.5 points), No. 6 Skowhegan (3-7, 32 points) and No. 7 Mount Blue of Farmington (0-10, 8.5 points).

The Class A North playoff matches are: No. 7 Mount Blue at No. 2 Hampden Academy on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 6 Skowhegan at No. 3 Brewer on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 5 Bangor at No. 4 Cony on Friday, Sept. 20; No. 4/No. 5 winner at No. 1 Mount Ararat on Monday, Sept. 23; No. 2/No. 7 winner versus No. 3/No. 6 winner at site of best seed on Monday, Sept. 23.

Winners of the South matches advance to the KVAC Class A shootout on at Brunswick Golf Club on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a 2:30 p.m. shotgun start.

Other high school golf tourney news: Thursday, Sept. 26, KVAC Class B shootout at 2 p.m. at Rockland Golf Club; Tuesday, Oct. 1, KVAC state qualifier at 10 a.m. at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro; Saturday, Oct. 5, state team championships at 10 a.m. at Natanis; and Saturday, Oct. 12, individual state championships at 10 a.m. at Natanis.

The following is a recap of the final two regular-season matches:

Belfast 8, Nokomis 1

At Northport Golf Club Sept. 18, the Lions finished off the regular season with a victory. Belfast finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 185 to 231 for Nokomis.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion golfers listed first, were: Thomas Parker (42) lost to Lindsay Cote (39), 3+1; James Ritter (43) beat Jacob Hawthorne (60), 5+4; Tommy Walker (44) beat Cody Chretien (63), 4+3; Casey Balicki (56) beat Tucker Lord (71), 5+4; K.J. Payson (66) beat Amber Scholton (69), 4+3; and Zach Sanderson (61) beat Jimmy Green (72), 5+4.

Cote shot 39 to earn medalist honors.

Belfast 6.5, Medomak Valley 2.5

At Rockland Golf Club Sept. 17, the Lions prowled to victory over the Panthers. Belfast finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 194 to 196 for Medomak Valley.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion golfers listed first, were: Thomas Parker (45) beat Carson Murphy (44), 1-up; James Ritter (45) lost to Sean Sebrey (44), 1-down; Tommy Walker (45) beat Merritt Gould (57), 4+3; Casey Balicki (59) halved his match with Garret Hutchins (61); Bobby Banks (63) beat Clayton Belcher (64), 2+1; and Zach Sanderson (61) lost to Adam Berry (51), 3+2.

In exhibition matches, Hagen Chase (72) lost to Tyler Metcalf (56), 5+4; K.J. Payson (56) lost to Noah Crosby (62), 3+2; Lillie Robbins (62) lost to Matthew Sirois (52), 3+2; Kayden Richards (57) beat Logan Look (71), 4+3; and Tom Littlefield shot 69.

Murphy and Sebrey shot 44 to earn co-medalist honors.
