Winslow — The Belfast football players and coaches understood they would have their hands full with host Winslow on Saturday, Sept. 23 in a Class C North high school showdown.

Not only did the game coincide in homecoming festivities for the Black Raiders, but the heat and humidity turned out unseasonably high temperatures — on only the second day of fall.

Winslow — annually one of the region’s top teams — played like it as they rattled off the first 42 points of the contest, and bulled its way to a 56-14 victory over Belfast.

The Black Raider offense clicked on all cylinders throughout the afternoon, particularly on the ground, as they got touchdowns of 66 and four yards respectively from Ryan Fredette, 6-yard scamper by Alex Demers, 12-yard score by Ben Dorval, 45-yard run from Isaiah Goldsmith and a 1-yard run by Ryan Gagnon.

Gagnon also had a 31-yard touchdown pass from Colby Pomeroy, while Justin Laflamme fired a 35-yard scoring pass to Nathan Newgard.

The Lions roared to a pair of late fourth-quarter scores — a 24-yard-run by Isaak Cunningham and a 5-yard run by Donovin Armstrong — but the outcome of the game was ultimately already decided.

Leading the Belfast offense were Cunningham (7 rushes for 107 yards, TD), Jack Hansen (11 rushes for 22 yards, catch for 14 yards), Tanner Veilleux (5 rushes for 2 yards), Armstrong (rush for 5 yards, TD), Chris Kelley (catch for 4 yards), Lucas Walker (catch for 33 yards) and Grey Dinsmore (rush for 4 yards).

Dylan Abbott was 3-of-10 for 50 yards under center for the Lions.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Belfast (0-4, no points) is 11th, while Winslow (3-1, 40.3125 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
