Young's Lobster Pound showcases colorful catches

Belfast — Anyone who's been to Young's Lobster Pound in Belfast over the last week may have seen two crustaceans of unusual colors — a rare blue lobster and another of the more commonly caught calico variety.

Young's owner and operator Raymond Young said the blue lobsters are especially rare — he said he sees them come off the boats about once a year. The calico colored lobsters, he said, might show up at the lobster pound about a dozen times annually.

The most unusual catch, said Young, was captured off Islesboro sometime last week, and the sight of it has fascinated his customers in the days since it arrived at the lobster pound.

The blue lobsters are edible, said Young, and said they lose their unique hue when the shells come into contact with boiling water.

"They cook up orange too," said Young.

Lobsters have eight different pigments in their systems, said Young, one of which causes the shell to turn blue.

"Mother Nature just decided to make this one blue," said Young with a smile.

Customers of all ages have enjoyed seeing the blue lobster this week, Young said, especially the kids.

"We love to have the kids come in here," said Young. "They have a ball, picking them up and holding them."

In the spring and fall, Young said he enjoys talking to elementary school children about the lobster fishing industry and giving the kids a chance to get a closer look at the sea creature that is most commonly associated with the Pine Tree State.

"It's fun," said Young. "A lot of kids don't see this kind of thing all the time."

Young said he would likely keep the blue lobster on display at the pound for a bit longer, and then he plans to donate the creature to the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport.
