Committee endorses bill to name Unity bridge after hero firefighter
Flood waters in Unity in 1954 stranded a family of 10 on top of their car. Neighbors built a human chain to try to rescue them, and Assistant Fire Chief helped to get nine family members to safety. He and one of the children lost their lives in the flood.

Legislation would rename bridge in honor of heroic firefighter
A measure proposed by state Sen. Chip Curry, D-Waldo, would memorialize Alton "Mac" McCormick Sr., who was Unity's assistant fire chief in September 1954, when hurricanes Carol and Edna delivered a one-two punch to Maine, with flooding in many places around Waldo County. McCormack lost his life trying to rescue a family stranded on the bridge across Sandy Stream when the road gave way and he was swept into the floodwaters.
