The modern holiday we call Thanksgiving originated in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. One day in late November, some men in Plymouth had gone out “fowling” and had shot a number of birds, most likely geese and ducks, which was enough food to last the colony about a week.

On Nov. 6, time was altered when we set our clocks back one hour, ending Daylight Saving Time. The practice of Daylight Saving Time was not originally proposed by Benjamin Franklin, as is commonly believed. Instead, he merely suggested that Parisians get up an hour earlier to save candle wax as a joke.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Mount View had its first band concert of the year, and my first as a high school student. There are three bands at Mount View Middle and High Schools, the sixth grade band, the seventh and eighth grade band, and the high school band. Each of these bands has the same director, Michael Venti.

I recently took some maps from my family’s basement and put them up on the wall of my bedroom. One of these maps is of undeveloped forest blocks in the Montville and Liberty area. These are sections of land between roads that are primarily wilderness.
