    First-in-the-nation recycling bill signed into law

    Gov. Janet Mills signed into law an extended producer responsibility bill that shifts costs for recycling and waste disposal to packaging manufacturers. The fees collected will support municipal recycling programs and encourage companies to reduce wasteful packaging.

    UARRC is seen as a viable recycling facility in the wake of China's refusal of much of the country's plastics. An Extended Producer Responsibility bill, currently on the governor's desk, would be first in the nation to shift costs of recycling from consumers to manufacturers.
