More than 800 Searsmont voters went to the polls or submitted absentee ballots this Election Day, nearly three out of every four eligible voters. They kept coming all day, filled the parking area, and did the town proud. And they know how to pick winners.

When the clocks turned back an hour this past weekend, and it got dark before 5 p.m., you had to wonder where the year went. It all seems a bit confusing, with fall leaves gone less than a week after peak foliage, Christmas displays already up before Thanksgiving and the baseball World Series being played while the football season is in full swing.

This column often features the Searsmont Town Library for good reason. The library circulates books, movies and music CDs, puzzles, games and Coastal Maine Botanical Garden tickets, provides high-speed computers and a copier, and sponsors music performances for everyone and music classes for kids. It hosts book groups and is a social center for the town.

Listening over the past two weeks to the talented chamber music performers at Muzzy Ridge Concerts and swingin’ Hot Supper and Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra musicians, we were struck by the importance of working together to make fine music. Isn’t it the same magic that brings hummingbirds to the feeders by the house, bumblebees to the flowers, gardeners to their gardens?
