Fall is my favorite season and we certainly felt it this week! I hate to get rid of my summer flowers; they are still going strong, but it's time to consider replacing them with mums and pumpkins. Apples are ready for picking.

My apologies for not writing a column last week; I plumb ran out of time. Some weeks are like that, trying to cram in doctor visits and town business while trying to get housework and other projects done before the snow flies.

I love our sunflower patch outside the Town Office. I pulled in the other morning and it was awash in color and activity. The bees love them and the American goldfinches have found the ones that have started turning to seed.

We certainly needed those two days of slow, soaking rain; I can almost see the lawn turning green.

As many of you know, I spend a lot of free time cleaning cemetery stones. This past week I was cleaning a baby's stone and noticed the inscription, "John Berry, Son of George and Vivian Berry 1942-1943." I grew up next door to the Berrys and never knew that they had a son who died at the tender age of one. I looked for their stone, not recollecting having seen one. I couldn't find their stone.

I was becoming a little concerned that I hadn't seen "Owen" the opossum lately. Upon my returning from a Select Board meeting a few nights ago at approximately 9 p.m., he was hanging out on my porch enjoying some leftovers. He ran under the cover of the porch; I wish he wasn't so shy.
